The Journal Times - 3/31/2024

Mar. 31—RACINE COUNTY — Urban Rural Action is seeking 28 applicants from Southeast Wisconsin to take part in its Uniting to Prevent Targeted Violence program this summer.

URA is a nonprofit that was started in 2018 by Joseph Bubman to bridge political divides.

UPTV works with local organizations to help prevent targeted violence based on political ideologies, religion, race and ethnicity, according to Bubman.

UPTV Southeast Wisconsin's partners include Kenosha Human Development Services; National Alliance on Mental Illness of Southeast Wisconsin in Waukesha County; Milwaukee organization Near West Side; New Beginnings in Walworth County; the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Center for Community and Nonprofit Studies; and neighborhood networking organization Common Agency.

The 15-month program, which is open to residents of Racine, Kenosha, Walworth Milwaukee and Waukesha counties, begins June 1.

Participants will work with a partnered community organizations to create targeted violence prevention programs.

Bubman said applicants do not need to have experience, as long as they are collaborative, committed to the cause and have a desire to solve problems.

"For us, this is a program that's about extending participation in our democracy," he said. "We really believe that everyone should be able to participate in our democracy through our programs, regardless of where they were born, or what their level of formal education is."

Applications are due by April 5. For more information, go to https://www.uraction.org/uptv-wi-uniters.html.
